Apa itu idioms? Idiom dalam Bahasa Indonesia juga berarti ‘idiom’ atau ungkapan. Idiom biasanya berupa frase (kumpulan kata) yang artinya berbeda dari definisi unsur-unsur kata yang menyusun frase itu. Atau, idiom memiliki makna tak langsung karena makna dari idiom tidak sama dengan makna kata-kata yang menyusunnya. Masih bingung? Mari kita lihat contoh English idioms di bawah ini yang mungkin sudah sering kita dengar:
cut the gordian knot = mengambil jalan pintas
learn by heart = menghafal

to make both ends meet = hidup pas-pasan
i will do my best = saya akan berusaha sungguh-sungguh (saya akan melaku yg terbaik)
above all = yang terpenting/ terutama
to be about to = baru saja hendak
drop in/by = mampir/singgah
all the better = malah lebih baik
after while = nanti sebentar
all the same = sama saja/ jika tidak apa-apa
all the time = sejak dulu,
non stop, terus menerus
arm in arm = bergandeng tangan
all over = semua telah selesai

go back = kembali pada (pokok pembicaraan, kebiasaan)
go on = meneruskan, terus menerus, terus
go up = naik, meningkat
go with = cocok, serasi, berpacaran
go with the wind = lenyap, berlalu utk selamanya
grow up = dewasa, dibesarkan, tumbuh dewasa(i was born and grown up in the country/ grow up. you are not a baby anymore/ mary is growing up now, so she wants to have a boy friend)
in advance = di muka, lebih dahulu, sebelumnya (thanks in advance of your kind attention = trimakasih sebelumnya atas perhatian baikmu) jadi salah atau kurang tepat kalau kita bilang thanks before
in and out = sering datang dan pergi
in charge = bertugas, memegang pimpinan (jhon is in charge now = jhon sedang bertugas sekarang)
in general = umumnya(the weather in jakarta is warm in general)
in love = sangat menyayangi(the new couple married are in love one another)
in memory of = sebagai peringatan(the new building was named ford hall in memory of james ford)
heartfelt thanks of = terima kasih dengan setulus hati in secret = secara diam-diam, masih rahasia(let no onee knows about it,please tell me in secret)
just about = hampir(i just about missed the train)
just now, a while ago= tadi, baru saja, sesaat yang lalu
keep from = mencegah, menahan(i keep her from going there alone)
keep dark = merahasiakan (you have to keep it dark to every one) to keep in mind = mencamkan, camkan,(please, keep my advice in mind=tolong,camkan nasehat saya)
never stop to learn !!! we don’t have to be great to start, but we have to start to be great !
keep in touch = menjaga agar selalu berkomunikasi/berhubungan (when you are abroad, please keep in touch with us any time)
any time = setiap waktu
keep on = terus,terus menerus(i keep/keep on walking/learning = saya terus berjalan/belajar))
know by sight = mengenal seseorang karena pernah melihat ( i never meet him but i know him by sight = saya tdk pernah berjumpa dengannya tapi saya tahu pernah melihatnya)
know by face = mengenal wajah ( idon’t know her name but i know her by face)
look after = menjaga, mengurus (jhon’s mother told him look after his youngest sister when she is out)
look down on = memandang rendah orang lain (she always looks down on her friends)
look forward to = sangat mengharap(we are looking forward to seeing you again)
look into = menyelidiki(we shall look into their complains)
look back = merenungkan kembali(mary likes look back on her old times) old times = masa/waktu silam
look up to = menghormati(the students must look up to their teacher)
look out = hati-hati, awas, waspada(look out!a car is coming in hight speed)
look over = memeriksa kembali(i will look it over whether it is right or wrong)
make believe = berpura-pura(i only made believe that i was sick)
make clear = menjelaskan (you must make clear to him about the problem) make eyes at = bermain mata, bersuka-sukaan(iwan likes make eyes at every girl)
make a living = mencari nafkah
no matter = tidak perduli/peduli (no matter now busy you are, you have to spend at least one hour every day to practise your english) no doubt = tidak sangsi lagi (it’s no doubt to make friend with her)

on trial = dalam percobaan (the new invitation is on trial)
open heart = jujur, dgn hati terbuka(i accept with an open heart to what she says)
open secret = bukan rahasia lagi(the news about her dismissal is an open secret)
out of order = rusak, tak bisa dipakai lagi
out of stock = habis persediaan
over age = lewat umur, ketuaan
under age – dibawah umur, masih muda, kemudaan
put aside = menyisihkan, membiarkan
put off – menunda, menangguhkan
put on = memakai, mengenakan
put out = memadamkan put down = mencatat
pay attention = memperhatikan
plays up = kambuh kembali run after = mengejar
run away = melarikan diri ( the thieves run away with a lot of money)
run way = landasan pacu pesawat terbang
run out = habis
side by side = berdekatan, berdampingan
on the side street = di ujung jalan
slip of tougue = salah ngomong/ucap, keseleo lidah to slow down = memperlambat jalan, menjadi lambat, pelan-pelan (the road was slippery, so we had to slow down the car) to stand by = siap sedia kalau dibutuhkan (i always stand by
